An eSIM uses an eUICC chip embedded in the device. Carrier profiles are delivered remotely via a Subscription Manager Data Preparation (SM-DP+) server using the GSMA SGP.22 standard. The profile contains authentication credentials that allow the device to connect to the carrier's network using standard 3GPP AKA authentication.
Consumer eSIM is governed primarily by GSMA SGP.22 (Consumer Remote SIM Provisioning). The eUICC hardware specification is GSMA SGP.02. IoT eSIM uses different standards (SGP.01/02 M2M). These standards ensure interoperability between devices and provisioning servers from different manufacturers.

Most travel eSIM plans are based on 4G/LTE wholesale agreements. 5G access requires both physical 5G coverage and a wholesale agreement that includes 5G access. Many MVNO agreements are limited to 4G. 5G offers higher peak speeds but 4G LTE is sufficient for most travel use cases.
Carrier-locked devices may reject third-party eSIM profiles. Locking is implemented at the LPA (Local Profile Assistant) level. Contact your carrier to request an unlock. Most carriers will unlock devices after contract completion or upon request in many jurisdictions.
The eUICC chip has limited storage for profiles, typically 5-20 depending on the chip manufacturer and device. Most devices can store multiple profiles but activate only 1-2 simultaneously. Profile storage limits are device-specific.
eSIM profiles are tied to the specific eUICC chip. When changing devices, profiles cannot be directly transferred. Most providers allow re-download to a new device, subject to their re-download policy (typically 1-2 times). Check provider terms before changing devices.
eSIM uses the same cryptographic authentication as physical SIM. The remote provisioning process uses TLS encryption. eSIM is resistant to physical theft (no card to steal) but introduces new attack surfaces around the provisioning process. Throttling reduces data speeds after a threshold is reached. Common throttle speeds are 128Kbps or 512Kbps. At 128Kbps, basic messaging and navigation work; video streaming does not. Most travel eSIM profiles include automatic APN configuration as part of the profile. If connectivity issues occur, manually configuring the APN using the provider's documented settings may resolve them. APN settings are found in device cellular/mobile data settings.
EU Regulation 2022/612 abolished retail roaming surcharges for EU/EEA residents traveling within the EU/EEA. This applies to retail customers of EU-based operators. Non-EU travelers and non-EU SIM cards are not covered. Fair use policies apply.
